Dog Food: Which Food is Best for my Pet?

Canidae All Life Stages vs. Victor Multi-Pro

Eating well is the secret to a good quality of life, longevity and feeling good in our skins – and it’s no different for our pets.  Feeding them the best dog food you can afford with high-quality ingredients will help keep your four-legged friends healthy and happy longer. However, the market for pet food has exploded and there are literally thousands of products to choose from.  It’s easy to be overwhelmed with the choice and unfortunately, it’s not always that easy to tell at a glance which products offer the right nutritious combinations to keep your pet in tip top shape. To help you better understand some of the available options, we will compare some of Canidae® ’s own pet food products with other leading brands in a series of posts – based on specific nutritional criteria to help you compare apples with apples.

What should I look for when buying dog food?

So, how do you work out which dog food brands are best for your dog?  Check out our comparison of Canidae’s All Life Stages Multi-protein dog food with Victor Multi-pro – based on several important nutritional criteria, which explains why Canidae’s food packs more calories, protein and nutrients per cup.  Remember that ultimately the best dog food is the one that works for your pet and a specific brand may occasionally not agree with certain pets.  If in doubt, ask your veterinarian for dietary advice, particularly if your pet has a sensitive stomach or other health conditions.  Changing a pet’s diet from one day to the next is not recommended, so find out how to switch your pet’s diet safely

Criteria for comparing –

Canidae All Life Stages vs. Victor Multi-pro:

Formula

Canidae’s All Life Stages protein-first formula has more protein, calories and fat per cup than Victor’s Multi-pro, which means your dog is getting more goodness – high quality ingredients, nutritional value and energy per cup.  Our product also guarantees specific amounts of essential fatty acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6, as well as probiotics for added health benefits.  Only Omega 3 and Omega 6 are guaranteed for Victor’s Multi-pro, although in lower amounts as per our table.

Life stages

Both products in our comparison are suitable for all dog breeds, ages, and sizes.

Calories per cup

Canidae’s All life Stages offers considerably more calories per cup than Victor Multi-pro, (506 vs 359) which means our product is more energy-rich and you would need a smaller amount of our product to feed the same size dog, potentially saving you money – depending on how much you’re feeding your dog. For an active dog of around 60 lbs – you will need approximately 2 ½ cups of Canidae All Life Stages Multi protein vs. 3 3/4 cups for the same size dog of Victor Multi-pro.

Protein percentage

Canidae has a higher percentage of protein – 24% vs. Victor’s 22.5% per cup – for this specific product, which means your dog is getting a more protein-rich, nutritionally dense food.

First 3 ingredients

The ingredients are listed in descending order, so the Canidae recipe contains more of the first ingredients than any other ingredient, in this case, chicken meal, turkey meal, and brown rice, whereas Victor Multi-pro contains more grain sorghum, beef meal, and chicken fat than other ingredients listed.  This means Canidae offers a protein-rich meat meal, whereas Victor Multi-pro has more grain compared to any other ingredient in the formula.

Guaranteed amounts of probiotics

Probiotics are very important to boost your dog’s digestive system. As you will notice in the table, Canidae’s All Life Stages offers guaranteed amounts of probiotics, whereas Victor Multi-pro does not have a guarantee.

Guaranteed amounts of Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are important to help keep your pet’s joints in good shape  – which is why Canidae’s All Life Stages offers guaranteed amounts per cup, which again, is not the case for Victor Multi-pro.

Guaranteed amounts of Omega 3 and Omega 6

Fatty acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6 help to give your pet that telltale healthy skin and glossy coat.  Canidae boasts guaranteed amounts of both: Omega 3: 0.7% and Omega 6: 1.8% minimum per cup. This is higher than the amounts guaranteed by Victor Multi-pro: Omega 3: 0.3% and Omega 6: 1.6%.

Only premium products

Canidae All Life Stages doesn’t contain any soy, wheat, or corn.   Note that soy, wheat, or corn are not necessarily bad for pets, however, Canidae prefers to focus on premium ingredients.  For Victor Multi-pro, it is not specifically stated whether the product contains soy, wheat, or corn.
