Crumbs, Costs and Current Formulas: Your Recent Canidae Questions Answered

At Canidae®, we have no secrets when it comes to our processes and products. We know being a pet mother or father can be stressful at times and understand you want the best for your dog or cat, so our team is very happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have related to our products.

Lately, we’ve noticed a few important and recurring questions in our community forums and we thought we would also answer them here to ensure our clients have a clear understanding of how we work and why we do things in a certain way. We want you to feel totally free to talk to us or ask us when you have any concerns, and we’re committed to giving you a quick and honest answer.

Why are there crumbs in my dog’s kibble?

Kibble, or dry food, has to be processed to make it perfect for your pet. We use the latest technology to filter crumbs out before packaging, but you may still find some crumbs — also known as fines — in your bag of pet food. Nothing to worry about here. Remember these are just smaller pieces of kibble and they are completely safe for your dog or cat to eat.

We love natural products, but it is true that natural isn’t always perfect. While it is possible to remove more crumbs by using chemical binders to help form the kibble, we prefer to provide your pet with food that reflects its premium ingredients and lack of fillers and that’s why we can’t guarantee there won’t be a few crumbs in and among your dog’s kibble.

Here are some examples of what these crumbs might look like:

Why am I paying more for Canidae’s pet food now?

Yes, it’s true that some of our prices may have gone up slightly due to rising costs of raw materials. At Canidae, we only use the best quality ingredients, but unfortunately some of these ingredients have gone up in price. The reasons for this range from droughts and poor crop yields (which can also impact animal protein prices since animals eat these crops) to the supply chain crisis which can cause increased shipping costs.

We understand it is frustrating to see a price increase, and that is why we have absorbed a lot of these rising costs ourselves. You may have noticed while shopping at your grocery store that the price of the food you eat has increased in the last few years. The ingredients that go into Canidae pet food are no different. We use many of the same ingredients to make our pet foods that you use to make your family meals. Unfortunately, we can't keep our prices the same over time while remaining committed to using high-quality ingredients, but we promise to do our best to minimize any increases.

Why have your formulas changed?

We say this a lot, but it’s true — we are committed to the pursuit of goodness. However, it’s important to note that goodness can always get better. That’s why we’re always striving to improve our expert-formulated recipes by making occasional tweaks that make our formulas better for your pet while maintaining that same tastiness.

So, for example, during our recent packaging update, we made a few little changes to improve nutritional quality and keep up with recommended AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) guidelines. These changes along with any others we make to our formulas are always tested rigorously to ensure dogs continue to feed well and transition seamlessly.
